Stolen from my room in the barracks at Ft. Dix, NJ, bacdk in the late 70s. The horn was in pretty good shape, in a standard Conn hard case. Always wondered where it ended up.

  • Two leadpipes, one taped to the other with duct tape.
  • It was in an old case with one of the support feet missing on the bottom of the case. This would cause the case to be very unstable when placed on the ground.

  • The horn is in very good condition, with very few dings and dents.
  • Fixed bell.
  • 90% original lacquer.
  • Taken without the case.

It was stolen in Charlottesville, Virginia, on the weekend of 1-2 November, 2003. Because Charlottesville is a small town, the thieves might try to sell the instrument in Richmond, Virginia, or Washington, DC.

  • The valves were rebuilt by Walter Lawson
  • Lacquer was stripped.
  • The bell was left un-cut, and the original pipe was left on.
  • On the valve spatulas were dimes dated 1901,1902 and 1903.
  • The inside of the bell was spray lacquered.

It was stolen in 1989 while the owner was student teaching in Mineola, NY.

Stolen out of the trunk of the owner's Toyota Camry on 13th Street near 5th Avenue in New York City, in February 2008.

Conn 10D, SN 475771 (or possibly 475776)
  • Yellow brass
  • Excellent condition - not unmarred, but no more blemishes than those resulting from normal wear and tear
  • A minor crease on the bottom edge of the bell, no more than 4-5 inches long
  • When it was taken it was in a basic black Conn hard case w/ primitive but effective nylon shoulder strap attached by hand w/ screws. There is a blotch on the side of the case of a different sheen, like glue residue or something, resembling where a logo emblem would typically be attached but is no longer there.
  • Also in the case were 3 raw brass custom mouthpiece cups and 2 screw-on acrylic plastic rims,
  • Holton Farkas MDC mouthpiece that the owner learned on wedged deep in the little cubby in the case, but that's not for sure. If it's there, most of the silver plating on the rim has been rubbed away from use, and
  • At least one old cloth diaper with dirty slide grease smudges on it tucked in there as well

It was taken from a house north of Seattle, WA (Bellingham, WA) sometime between May and July 2005.

Yamaha Cornet

Lost at CSU Ft Collins CO in student center during Rocky Mountain Summer Music Camp 14 July 06. 13 year old lost back pack music case, soft sided, with a Jupiter flugelhorn and Yamaha student cornet w/shepards crook inside. The flugelhorn is a rose brass color model 846RL with the 3rd valve trigger, the cornet is lacquer. Also 2 mouthpieces, both 3c one burgundy plastic. Child heartbroken. Any help greatly appreciated.

Stolen in San Francisco. Stolen on 11-10-2001 in San Francisco with a keyboard, 2 speakers, a foot pedal and various cables. The San Francisco Police Department case number is 011358567.

It was in a brown hard case with two handles. Two mouthpieces, cleaning materials and two mutes painted black were inside of case.

  • Trumpet was in large black soft gig bag that had shoulder strap, greenish/gray interior with central removable pocket.
  • Bag also contained blue zipper bag with approx 4 mouthpieces, straight mute, cup mute, bucket mute, harmon mute, practice mute, charts, oils etc etc.
  • Trumpet is recognizable as the lacquer has been sandpapered off.

Bach Stradivarius 37B Bb Trumpet w/Blackburn leadpipe
  • Blackburn lead-pipe, model 11
  • The horn was in a Bach soft-side gig bag along with two mouthpieces, a Schikle, model 15a4a and a Blackburn, model 3c
  • K and M in-bell trumpet stand stored in the bell
  • half bottle of Super C valve oil
  • The Bach was originally purchased in 1976 and was modified in June of this year with the Blackburn lead-pipe. The distinguishing feature on the trumpet is the Blackburn lead-pipe: the horn is silver and the lead-pipe is raw brass. THIS IS DIFFERENT THAN THE PICTURE. The picture was taken prior to this modification.

The trumpet was stolen sometime between 2:00 pm, October 24th and 10:30 am, October 25th, 2007, from a 1990 Honda Accord parked at my residence in Athens, Tennessee.

    Stolen from Central Florida in 1992.

    The trail is cold as this horn was stolen in 1992; however, good instruments never disappear and I know that someone out there is playing it. This trumpet is not particularly valuable and it has long since been replaced, but it's 20 year history is priceless to me.

    King Super 20 by H. N. White Bb Trumpet, SN 330XXX

    Stolen from Drury College, Springfield, Missouri in 1981.

    At the time it had just been refurbished, silver plated, and had a then new black King case with blue interior. At the time the case had a Bach 3C mouthpiece in it and a convertible straight/cup mute with a thumbscrew removable aluminum cup.

    Lost at CSU Ft Collins CO in student center during Rocky Mountain Summer Music Camp 14 July 06. 13 year old lost back pack music case, soft sided, with a Jupiter flugelhorn and Yamaha student cornet w/shepards crook inside. The flugelhorn is a rose brass color model 846RL with the 3rd valve trigger, the cornet is lacquer. Also 2 mouthpieces, both 3c one burgundy plastic. Child heartbroken. Any help greatly appreciated.

    This, and another trombone, were stolen out of a car on February 3, 2007. Stolen in front of the Santa Clarita Bowling lanes in Santa Clarita, California.

  • In the case there was a plunger in the bell and a Vincent Bach 6 1/2 AL small shank mouthpiece.

    WHAT TO DO TO PROTECT YOUR INSTRUMENT FROM THEFT

    1. Keep track of your equipment.
    2. Take only what you need to a job.
    3. Don't leave equipment unattended.
    4. Keep small items, that are easily picked up by passing people, toward the middle of the section.
    5. Keep your eyes open and be aware of your surroundings. If you don't trust the people walking by, then don't take your hands off your equipment.
    6. Insure your more expensive equipment. Most insurance complanies can add an instrument floater policy to your homeowner's policy. Be aware that professionally used equipment may not be insurable, or may be insurable at a higher rate, due to the higher risk. Keep the original receipt, to include the serial number. Keep a picture of it too, just in case you have to file a claim.
    7. Install a monitored burglar alarm for your home. It will not only protect your possessions when you are away, it will protect your whole family from fire and burglars.
    8. You may also want to check out the history of your instrument. Try to get hold of the original sales receipts, and always use receipts yourself!
    9. Offer a reward. Sometimes even a small one will help. Often a stolen instrument ends up in the hands of an unsuspecting buyer, whom is then faced with the difficult moral dillema of playing a stolen instrument, or giving up their "investment". Help them out, they'll cooperate!
    10. Make a commitment to never acquire stolen, or suspected stolen, gear. Buying stolen equipment will encourage more theft, and your instrument may be next.

    WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR INSTRUMENT IS STOLEN

    1. Immediately call the police and report it. Make sure you have all the information you need to identify it accurately.
    2. Immediately report the loss to your insurace company, even if you think it will be recovered.
    3. List your stolen instrument on this page.
    4. Contact local pawn shops with the item description.
    5. Contact local band directors with the item description.
    6. Contact local music stores with the item description.
    7. Monitor online sources, such as eBay, Trumpet Herald, Hornplayer.net, and other links for online for sale ads.
    8. Report the loss to the appropriate online instrument discussion lists.
    9. For higher ticket, and custom made instruments (Alexander, Lawson, Paxman, Pizka, Rauch, Lewis, Durk, Rico Kuhn, Blackburn, Lawler, Monette, Scodwell, Taylor, Wedgewood, etc), you may want to contact the manufacture or the major dealer in your country. If future owners want service on these instruments, they may send them back to the custom shop for work, not knowing they are stolen.
    10. If you are going to buy an instrument, check this page first. If you find an instrument you want to buy is on this list, contact the individual listed and the police. If you find one stolen instrument, it is possible that yours is not far away.
